The Women’s Team Pursuit was re-introduced to the Irish Cycling calendar for 2017 with great success, including a knock-on effect to all other events held on the day.
The Team & Keirin National Track Championships were held at Sundrive Velodrome on Saturday (August 5th) with the Team Pursuit back on the roster , and for the first time in its new format over 4km .
The Women’s Commission had made it a goal to see the event go ahead with a minimum of Six Irish Club Teams , and they contacted Clubs , and organised pre-season Track Training days where riders were shown the basics and encouraged to get their Club involved with fielding a four woman team.
The ‘Women’s Team’ event captured the imagination of a lot of the riders that took part in the early open days , and Clubs like Clontarf CC , with no previous Women’s Track presence began working on their plan to race their first Nationals .
The Arcane Women’s Team was set up with a plan from ‘Zero to Nationals’ with the help of their Coach and Sponsor Martyn Irvine .
The new young riders of TC Racing also committed to fielding a competitive team .
Soon after – the older , more established Track Teams of Bray Wheelers , Orwell wheelers , and Sundrive Track Team were working on their own entries , and it looked very positive for the event.
On the day it was the Cycling Ireland Talent ID riders that Won the Gold with Sundrive Track Team in Silver , and Orwell in Bronze , but it was a close run affair across all seven teams , and next year promises to be very competitive.
The popularity of the Women’s Team Pursuit resulted in more Women & more Women’s Teams than their male counterparts in all three races at the National Track Championships.
