Rio 2016 might not even have started yet but plans for the development of a new women’s High Performance (HP) Cycling Squad for the Olympics in Tokyo 2020 are well under way. The HP Unit splits the 4 year funding cycle into 2 phases – a 2.5 year development phase in the Performance Programme is starting now which will involve growing the Elite Women’s squad to 12 – 15 riders.
The 1.5 year qualification phase will follow this, and will concentrate on approx. 6 riders for the Olympics. The remaining riders will still be part of the team and encourage competition for places among the squad and should be able to attend some events that will take the pressure off the Top 6 riders.
The Women’s Commission have been asked to promote the International Track GP, which is happening at Sundrive Velodrome next weekend, as a key event for any rider who wishes to be considered for the HP program. This is your chance to shine and show your potential to the selectors – don’t miss it! There is racing for seniors and for juniors so get registered for the event now! Registration is free but you need to have track accreditation. Register at http://www.cyclingireland.ie/page/track/dublin-track-cycling-international
