Round One of the O’Sullivan Cycles sponsored Munster Women’s League took place in Broadford under the race organisation of Liam Collins, Newcastle West, The Michael Shiels Memorial Race.
A five lap course, 51km in total, relatively flat roads with a drag to the finish – a nice opener to the season for the 14 women who signed on.
The race was a mixed bunch with the M50s mixing it with the women!! The conditions where extremely windy but surprisingly the sun came out and it stayed dry!! The windy conditions and the numerous corners and increasing speed over the short lap played there part in whitling down the bunch as the laps went on.
It was great to see so many new faces sign on to take on the challenge of racing. Most noteably was Cork Giants Agnieszka Woźniak (Cork County CC) who was very strong and showed fantastic positioning and strength to stay in that top 10 throughout the race and almost pulling off the win just getting pipped on the drag to the line by Emma Walsh (Waterford CC). First year junior Orla Desmond (TC Racing) rounded off the podium in 3rd place. Unfortunately, Niamh O’Donovan (Dungarvan CC) was unlucky to take a spill about 250mtrs from the finish, we all wish her a speedy recovery.
Thanks to all who signed on and to the league sponsor O’Sullivan Cycles. The next round of the league takes place in Dungarvan on the 26th March.
