Rider Race Reports from New Irish Cycling Champions & ‘Billy Bisland Team’ Riders Robyn Stewart & Autumn Collins:
” Robyn and I met the night before at Sundrive Velodrome to decide our gearing and to do a few starts. Our first proper run out was on race day and after warming up we had a rain delay – we were seeded favourites and last off .
Organisers did their best to dry the track using leaf blowers but it was still quite wet.
We were both pleased to still break the national record by a half second and to Win the Nationals .
Robyn and I both also won all of our Keirin heats and our separate semis – and the rain held off apart from a few showers.
In the final I drew second position but as we set off another rider took their hand off the bars and pushed me down the track causing a restart.
We line up again and after the Derny pulls off Fiona Guihen led out the sprint from the front, with about 300 to go , I rushed the gap and came around her and after that Robyn came over me to take a very convincing win”.
“A great weekend in Ireland for the national keirin and team sprint champs. The weather was set to be grim from the get go but racing went ahead with just a few rain delays.
First up for myself and Autumn was the team sprint and we were the last team up.
We were all warmed up and ready to go but the heavens opened and racing was postponed. This was unfortunate as the planned warm up was then changed and the legs went from being ready to being wet and cold!
A bit of time later we got our team sprint in and delighted to get a gold and set a new Irish track record.
Next up were the keirins and I was delighted to see a big field of women.
I finished with wins in each round and a gold in the final -happy result for my first nationals.
A great weekend and can’t thank all the organisers and cycling Ireland staff for enough a great day!”
