The women’s commission was set up in 2002 as a result of a group of women wanting to do something about establishing a women’s cycling scene in Ireland with proper representation. We have increased the numbers of women racing in Ireland and have also helped increase the standard of racing.
There are now a number of full time Irish women racing in road and mountain biking. When we started, there was only one. We have increased participation in our leagues and had over 60 women sign on at our women only racing events last year. In 2006 we introduced Ras na mBan, an international racing event, which attracted almost 80 riders racing over 2 days.
We organise women’s events throughout the year including two racing leagues; we run coaching and training courses open to all women, we send Irish teams away to race and promote women cycling events. By working with cycling clubs and other commissions of Cycling Ireland we get women into cycling and help to retain them in the sport. We represent women’s cycling and act as a voice for it.
