Armagh’s newest women’s cycling group is in Steady CC.
The Steady Cycling Club, Armagh has a women only group which was started to try to attract more females locally to the sport. It is currently a group of 9-10 leisure cyclists who meet twice a week in the summer months and on Saturday mornings in the winter. On our Saturday morning run we cycle between 30 and 40 miles, stopping on the way round at a cafe for coffee and a bit of craic. Our average speed would be between 12 and 14mph.The mid week run is a steady 20-25 mile run without a stop. This season we cycled the Bangor Coastal Challenge and the Bike the Blackwater and for most of the group who hadn’t done any serious cycling till April of this year this was quite an achievement.
We hope to increase the numbers next year by running a starter group for 4-6 weeks from February.
The womens group is supported and informally coached by the men in the club and we enjoy occasional spins or part spins together which benefits confidence, fitness building and general knowledge about maintenance and cycling technique etc.
Whilst none of us women is currently interested in competitive cycling there is the possibility of joining the men’s runs for a faster more challenging spin.
