The Women’s Commission have recently revised their Development Programme. While the bones of it is the same – with a strong emphasis on coaching and skills, there have been a few amendments which make it more inclusive, on one hand, but on the other hand there is a tightened criteria regarding selection for Irish Development Teams.

Cycling Ireland have recently announced their Talent ID programme for riders who are interested in being a part of the Elite Track Endurance Squad. The Application form can be downloaded in this post.
The First Winter Training Camp for women took place in wild conditions on Saturday 25th October in Avon Rí, Blessington. This first training day was focusing on general training methods, with running and circuit training on the agenda. Nutrition and bike set up were discussed before Siobhan Dervan closed the camp with her words of wisdom, following her recent top class result at the World Championships.
The first Training Camp for Women takes place on Saturday morning at 9.30 am in Avon Rí, Blessington. This should be a great kick start to the season for all cyclists, with a guide to general fitness with Paddy Doran and Aidan Ryan, a talk on nutrition and bike set up. Guest speaker Siobhan Dervan will be talking about her experiences as a professional cyclist.
2008 saw positive moves forward for women’s cycling on all levels, thanks to further support from the Women in Sport Initiative, increased training and coaching camps, testing and increased competition. A big effort was put into raising the profile of women’s cycling, in the hope of opening the sport up to more people, resulting in membership to CI more than doubling.
The shortlist for the Member Awards in Cycling Ireland were announced today. Please remember to vote now for the winner. The Sneem Hotel Rás na mBan has been nominated as the top event – and Valerie Considine as volunteer of the year.

It wasn’t all bad news in the 2009 Budget – the cup is almost half full… well, almost… Good news for bike enthusiasts – the following scheme is being introduced:
Until 2007 the women’s end to end record (Mizen Head to Fair Head) was held by Isobel Woods (nee Clements). This record was set in the 1950s, in a very different Ireland, and she recently wrote a book describing her experience.
There will be a mountain bike spin for beginners on Saturday 11th October, at 11am in Ballinastoe Woods. (more…)
Today Cycling Ireland announced that they are conducting a review of their High Performance Process, and are moving towards being a professionally led organisation. They will be placing a major focus on track racing, as that is where the majority of Olympic Medals are up for grabs.
Following the resignation of Sean Herlihy from The Cycling Ireland Board at the last board meeting on September 29th, the Board proposed to invite Orla Hendron to fill this vacancy. This was agreed and accepted by The Board and Orla.
