The countdown has begun….. the first race of the Boot Inn League 2008 will be next Wednesday 30th April – race kicks off outside the Boot Inn (yes – it’s a pub) at 7pm. All abilities will be catered for – and we will provide coaching for this first race. Come along if you fancy trying a new sport, or would like to test your spinning skills outdoors.
This is a fantastic opportunity for those of you who are new to Road Racing, and feel a bit clueless as to how it all works. With top Irish and International coaches Paddy Doran, Scott McDonald, Aidan Hammond and Geoff Liffey guiding this first race – you will be learning skills from the best!!
We will divide the women into groups based on experience and ability – and assign a coach to the groups. The coach will ride around with the group for the first half of the race teaching them about gear changes, group work, attacking and advising them on bike set up. For the second half of the race the women can test out what they have learnt.
This will be a fully coached session, and suitable for everyone – do come along – we look forward to seeing you……
The basic requirements are as follows:
- a safe bike – in good condition (by safe – I don’t mean with stabilisers!!)
- a helmet
- if you have a race license – bring it, if not you can buy a one-day license from us.
- food and drink (preferably non-alcoholic!!) to keep you going!
Directions:
FROM THE M50
Take the exit for the airport. Turn right at the Main Airport Roundabout in the direction of Swords. Turn left at the roundabout (just past the coachman’s inn). Follow the road until you come to another small roundabout, taking the first exit. Turn left after about 100 yards. The Boot Inn is about half a mile down this road, on the left hand side.
There will also be a group cycling out from the GPO on O Connell Street at 5.45pm.

Hi,
I’ve just bought a bike and am interested in trying racing – I’ve done on average 20mile spins but have never raced –
do you think the Boot Inn would be good for me? I’m hoping to improve my fitness over the summer months but don’t want
to kill myself either.
thanks
Sandra.
Just wondering how long it takes to cycle out from the GPO?
Pity there isn’t a beginner league for men – i’d say it’d be a very popular event. The open races can be very hard for a new person getting
in to racing.
The cycle out, from the GPO, takes around 45 min. We don’t cycle too hard, but it means we are nicely loosened out to race.
If you are able to cycle for 20 miles, and are looking to improve your fitness – this is perfect for you. The races are worked in a handicapped manner – whereby the slower or less experienced girls head off first, with a time gap to the next group and so on. The idea is that the last group to start (with members of the Development Squad and similar standard) is trying to catch the groups in front of them. The rest of the groups are aiming to hold their lead. Last year this lead to some very exciting finishes – with the groups coming together coming into the line. You’ll love it – and it’s an exciting, fun way to improve your basic fitness!!
The women racing are lucky to have these races – as they are an ideal environment to learn good skills at an early stage!!!
hi!
Can you advise a little about licences for those who hope to do more than two or three races – i.e. what is the best option if you dont want to be buying a one day licence every week but you are not in a club? I have read the page to do with the licences but cant really tell which one I will need.
Thanks!
