Action from the National Youth Championships

Report by Emma Walsh

Last weekend saw a record numbers of girls in action across all age categories at the Youth National Championships 2016 in Kanturk. The National championships consists of a Time Trail, a Criterium and a Road Race. It was a tough weekend of racing but a great platform for these young riders to showcase their skillful bike handling, amazing talent and  drive to compete.

The TT took place on Saturday morning, it was over a distance of 8km, into a driving headwind with rain bucketing down. This definitely played into the ‘mental’ side of cycling, where riders had to keep focused and positive under such hard conditions, where someone described the effort as akin to cycling backwards, the wind was so strong!!

The afternoon race was a crowd pleaser – the Crit! Once again the weather was going to play its part but it didn’t stop the girls throwing the bikes into the corners and accelerating out trying to get a gap on their rivals. Once again amazing skill was shown considering the lack of Crit racing for most of the riders.

On Sunday the road race took place over a rolling course with one or two ‘sharp digs’ that would help in deciding the race outcome. The under 11 and under 12 girls raced with the boys group as they would have been doing all year and gave an excellent account of themselves on a very tough finishing few kilometres to the line. The u13/u14 and the u15/u16 had their own separate races. This again would have been a first for many of these girls to get the chance to race against each other and experience what it’s like to race each other without being in a group with the boys. The Mullingar sisters Aoife (u12) and Caoimhe (u14) showed their class all weekend topping off an amazing championship by becoming National Road Champions. Orla Desmond (U16) had an amazing race proving how strong she is on the road, powering her way up the finishing drags and taking home the Jersey and the Gold medal.

Well done to all the competitors over the weekend both boys and girls!! The future of Irish cycling looks bright.

Hopefully going forward with record number of girls competing every weekend throughout the country it would be nice to see a few more separate ‘girls only’ races appear on the Cycling Ireland calendar.
