Riders competing in the 2015 Women’s National League

With just 2 short months to go until the first race of the 2016 Women’s National League we bring you news of the races that will make up this year’s series. In addition, we are delighted to welcome Joe Daly Cycles on board as Women’s National League sponsors once again this year!

There will be 8 races in the 2016 Women’s National League, and your best six results will be tallied at season-end to establish final standings on the league table. Once again this year there has been massive interest from race organisers in having their women’s races included in the Joe Daly Cycles Women’s National League line-up.

Women’s National League coordinators for 2016, Niamh Stephens (UCD CC) and Roisin Kennedy (Arcane CT) have selected races based on geographical and seasonal spread. In addition, league races have been chosen according to the race distance offered, and the relative challenge provided by each route.

Opening Round: Sunday 20th March

The 2016 Joe Daly Cycles Women’s National League will kick off on Sunday 20th March with the legendary Des Hanlon Memorial Classic , promoted by Carlow CC.

This is the first year The Des will be included in the Women’s National League schedule, though the promoters have included a stand-alone women’s race on their program for the last few years, so many of you will already be familiar with the thrills this famous race has on offer.

If further incentive were needed to include riding The Des on your plans for the year, we can confidently report that part of the race circuit will be included in the route of a stage of this year’s Ras na mBan… so consider that Women’s National League Round 1 will double as a recce for Rás na mBan (and more of this later)!

Two Rounds in April, and in May

On Sunday 17th April the Women’s National League moves to Tipperary for the always epic Visit Nenagh Classic with it’s town centre base, and festival atmosphere.

Then, the following Sunday, April 24th, will see riders line up in Meath for the long-standing calendar event that is Bohermeen CC’s Waller Cup race…. one for the sprinters, surely!

Having previously been held over the June Bank Holiday weekend, Deenside Wheelers have moved their race program to early May for 2016. So on Sunday 8th May the Women’s National League riders will take on the Deenside Cup race around Castlecomer. And guess what? as they do so they will also be doing a sneaky Rás na mBan route recce… yes, the Deenside Cup circuit will also be incorporated into one of this year’s stages, shhh!

Two Sundays later the Joe Daly Cycles Women’s National League will head to Ulster, for Emyvale CC‘s Grand Prix race in Co. Monaghan. Having been a Women’s National League race for several years, the Emyvale GP women’s event was not a league race last year, so it’s return to the series will be welcomed by the many riders who enjoy this scenic race.

Brand new race for June!

Sunday 12th June will bring us all to Co. Roscommon and to a race that will form part of the Women’s National League for the very first time… the Donamon GP, promoted by Donamon Dynamos. This will be the final league race before the Cycling Ireland National Championships (25th June) so no doubt there will be much interest in who has “the good legs” in the Donamon GP!

League wrap-up with final two races in July

Sunday 3rd July will see Women’s National League riders once again on familiar roads, as Slaney CC welcome us to the sunny south east and the Eddie Tobin Memorial circuit in Bunclody, Co. Wexford.

Then, a fortnight later, on Sunday 17th July, Lakeside Wheelers will host us for the final round of the 2016 Joe Daly Cycles Women’s National League, when riders will confront the rolly roads of Westmeath that form the route for the Mullingar GP.

Pre- and post-race info

As each Women’s National League race rolls around we will provide comprehensive race preview articles here, with the help of each race organiser. And in addition, with the welcome assistance of riders, we will provide reports from each race afterwards.

Best wishes to all for the season ahead!
